HIV Prevention Education

Valley AIDS Council has been committed to providing HIV prevention, testing & counseling, and medical care in South Texas for the past 26 years. VAC has locations in Brownsville, Harlingen, and McAllen that provide free anonymous and confidential HIV testing. With our rapid HIV testing you can test for HIV and receive results within 20 minutes. Blood tests for HIV can also be conducted and results can be received in 2 weeks. We also provide free testing for Syphilis, Gonorrhea, and Chlamydia and you can receive results within 2 weeks.

VAC is also part of a statewide initiative to distribute free condoms and safer sex kits. VAC understands that condoms save lives and we are committed to ensuring that everyone needing condoms and safer sex supplies in the Rio Grande Valley has access at no cost. If you are an organization or business that would like to become a Free Condom Distribution Site please contact:

One-on-one counseling is available through the VAC Education Department and our program Choosing Life: Empowerment, Actions, Results (CLEAR). This intervention was developed to support people living with HIV and for HIV negative individuals at risk for HIV. The staff work with and support their clients to reduce higher risk behaviors like unsafe sex and substance abuse by identifying situations that elicit risk behavior. CLEAR also builds skills in condom use self-efficacy and safer sex negotiation. VAC staff work closely with clients to reduce emotional distress and increase quality of life and one of the ways this is addressed is by teaching the CLEAR participants relaxation and meditation techniques in an effort to control negative emotional states.

The VAC education department relies heavily on community members volunteering their time and energy. If you’re interested in becoming a volunteer please feel free to go in person to any of our VAC offices to pick up an application or download one from our Volunteer Page. Once the application is complete you may drop it off at any of our locations for processing.

You can help us make a difference in South Texas!
